Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. When her father passed away in the role of a carnival barker at the age of a little girl and she was forced to provide for the family by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth was raised in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she attended the school. But she only stayed in school for a couple of years, then taking a break to pursue her acting profession. The route she took did not come without challenges. While in New York, her first task was to pose stills for crime magazines. the theatre work that she wanted eluded. When she was employed as a hat-check woman in a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. The New England Repertory Company was her first gig as a regular actor. She earned money by performing during the daytime working as an Usherette. Also, she studied drama. She later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
